My general approach to design

Here's the approach I follow but if you'd like to see something much more concrete, you can download a UX case study from here (pdf).

Please note that even though I'm not allowed to publish real-world work samples, I can showcase them personally. A lot of high-fidelity deliverables are ready to be showcased including deliverables from process definition, strategy, through research, wireframing, prototyping to visual deliverables.

Background Image
  • I TAKE A FIRST LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE AND UNDERSTAND STRATEGY

A high-level strategic overview helps put my mindset into the right context by understanding corporate strategy, differentiating values and competition.

    Some key checklist items:

    • Do I understand where the project is standing in the world of design strategy?
    • Are we solving the problem at a strategic or tactical level?
    • Are we introducing or optimizing?
    • Do we understand why we are doing it?

  • I ANALYZE THE PROBLEM AND COLLECT DATA I NEED TO DESIGN

With business objectives in mind I interact with the right people in the right way to extract information I need to design effectively.

    Some key checklist items:

    • Have I identified answers to what questions I need to be able to answer myself to ensure design solutions really address the problem in question?
    • Have I identified the right participants I need to interact with?
    • Do I know what the best ways of interacting with these participants are?

  • I MAKE SENSE OF ALL I HAVE COLLECTED

With my own research objectives in mind, I give meaning to all I have so far, categorize, discuss, iterate and deliver findings in the most suitable way.

    Some key checklist items:

    • Are answers to my own research objectives clear, i.e. am I ready to conceptualize solutions?
    • Have I identified the right representations of summarizing and delivering my findings?
    • Can I identify any high-level, key directions of design?

  • I PROPOSE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM

With all my observations, pain points and potential opportunities in hand, I identify key themes and deliver multiple interactive, content-friendly design solutions. I try to aim for least known and risky functionalities, we all have a good understanding on how login would work...

    Some key checklist items:

    • Am I matching common expectations and maintaining consistency?
    • Have I identified the best representation of delivering potential design solutions?
    • Is the level of fidelity of these deliverables high-enough to make sure all is clear to users?

  • I VALIDATE MY SOLUTIONS

Using the available solutions I reach out to users and key stakeholders to identify areas to revise and keep.

    Some key checklist items:

    • Do these solutions make sense to test participants?
    • Do individual solutions work well together, i.e. is the groundwork right?
    • Is the content right?
    • Have I identified any common patterns across all feedback?

  • I ITERATE AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT MAKES BOTH USERS AND BUSINESS HAPPY

With all the feedback I make changes as necessary until I get to a single solution that keeps all parties smiling.

  • I ALSO ENJOY DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING TOOLS THAT MAKE MY OR MY TEAM'S WORKFLOW MORE EFFECTIVE

    Some examples...

A prototyping framework based on UI technologies that extends Axure's capabilities to allow UXers to deliver much richer prototypes in terms of interactions and visual language. It automatically integrates visual design specs and supports dynamic and instant re-skinning by hierarchical theming. More than happy to showcase.

Another example could be a web-based user interface development framework that generates production ready, maintainable and scalable code that enforces UI development best practices. The framework helps bridge the gap between Design and Development by allowing the development team to quickly restructure the page while maintaining quality.

Testimonials

  • I worked with Balázs in the same UX team for almost 18 months. It’s often argued that UX unicorns don’t exist so Balázs is indeed a rare find.

He is multi-talented UXer with who is extremely skilled in all aspects of UX, UI and interaction design but with the added bonus of coming from a technical background, he is able to create extremely sophisticated prototypes to illustrate the complex journeys and interactions.

Balázs is one of the nicest people to know and work with and he is an invaluable asset with his skills, work ethic and professionalism.
If I were to build a dream team, Balázs would be the first person I would hire. I recommend Balázs without hesitation.

  • There isn't enough space to write all of the great superlatives I'd like to use to describe Balazs, his work ethic and approach to design. If I had to choose - "talented", "resourceful", "motivated", "adaptable" and "creative" immediately come to mind.

Balazs and I worked in Commercial banking, and were part of a new "digital lab" that was created to change the Bank's approach to design and development.

Balazs's genius lay in creating deceptively simple (intuitive) user interactions, that were complemented by clean designs. What users did not see was the vast amount of work, research and collaboration that Balazs undertook (often within extremely tight timeframes) to achieve his design goals... (more on LinkedIn)

  • Balazs is a great UX designer, has a incisively logical flair for problem-solving, a phenomenal attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of web development with which to back these things up. He's also highly capable at explaining complex concepts to clients and new team members, and has that combination of disciplined drive and purposefulness with a capacity for philosophical overview that is so useful in moving forward large-scale projects. And he's a nice person to be around, and a very effective member of any team.

    Nick Breakell
Service Designer at Department for International Trade (DIT)
  • I have been working with Balazs in RBS on many projects. As VP Visual Designer I came across many UX designers and I must say that Balazs is one of the best UX designer I have ever worked with. He is not only perfectly precise in wireframes but also great in developing. He always proposes his work starting with workflow, detailed notes and prototype. He is great to work with visual designers and developers, fully understands all bits and pieces in any project. I highly recommend Balazs as Senior UX Designer.

    David Lenartowicz
Vice President, Senior UI Designer at Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Balazs possesses a rare combination of technical expertise in a highly sought-after area - proper user interface engineering (not your dad's old front-end development) with a great personality and attitude that is assuring to customers. He makes you feel like you are being taken care of and he is working in your best interests. He's just an all around great performer.

Personal

I am a very curious and adventurous person and have a wide range of interests.

Music

  • I went to music school for 12 years taking piano and music theory lessons successfully building up my life-long passion for music.

I have also had the privilege to take music composition lessons from the amazing classical composer Peter F. Wolf in Kirkland, WA, USA.

Some of my piano compositions have been recorded and are available on SoundCloud here. I am also experimenting with composing for orchestra.

Scuba diving

  • As an PADI advanced open-water diver I always look for dive sites wherever I go. I've done over 50 dives in countries all around the world.

The most notable ones include the manta ray night dive in Hawaii, the whaleshark dive on the Maldives and the dive in the chilly waters of southern-Canada for a very different wildlife.
Background Image

Flying

  • As a private pilot's licence holder I love to spend time in the air flying a small 2-seat microlight aeroplane. I have flown over 100 hours as pilot-in-command in the UK and France.

The most notable trips include the flight to the Pyrenees in Southern-France or the absolutely stunning flight to the Scottish highlands.

Photography

  • I believe curiousity and open-mindedness make one want to capture interesting and unusual moments.

I do my best to return from a holiday with at least a couple of shots capturing something extraordinary. Like a hatching grasshopper in the Amazon Rainforest (right).
